Appearance

Myelocytes are immature neutrophils released prematurely from the bone marrow. They show:

  • A round or oval nucleus (not yet lobed)
  • Dense, granular cytoplasm
  • Larger size than mature neutrophils
  • Sometimes a faint perinuclear halo

They indicate emergency immune production.

Meaning & Implications

Myelocytes signify the body is under significant immune stress, usually:

A) Acute Infection

Especially bacterial infections requiring rapid neutrophil response.

B) Severe Inflammation

Tissue damage or systemic inflammatory activation.

C) Bone Marrow Stress

The marrow is “pushing out” cells faster than normal.

D) Nutrient Deficiency

Especially B12 and folate, affecting proper development.

E) Haematological Disorders

Rare but serious causes include:

  • Leukemia
  • Myeloproliferative disorders

Functional Interpretation

Myelocytes represent a left shift — the immune system is accelerating neutrophil production.

Common symptoms in clients with myelocytes:

  • Fever
  • Infection symptoms
  • Joint pain
  • Sinus or respiratory symptoms
  • Fatigue
  • Swollen glands

Interventions

Immune Activation Protocol

  • Immucil
  • Vitamin C (2 g twice daily)
  • Zinc
  • Glutathione 500
  • NAC
  • Adequate protein

Support Bone Marrow Function

  • Folate
  • Methyl-B12
  • Iron if deficient
  • Omega-3 fatty acids

Reduce Inflammation

  • Curcumin
  • Astaxanthin

Further Investigations

  • FBC + ESR
  • Peripheral blood smear
  • B12/Folate testing
  • Viral screen
  • CRP
  • If persistent: haematology referral
